The Three Erie Canals, History and Folklore

Bruce Schwendy will present the history of the Erie Canal, including the section that ran through the South Wedge, on Sunday, January 20th at 2:00 pm in the Historic Calvary St. Andrews Sanctuary in the ROC SALT Center located on Averill Avenue at Ashland Street.
Titled “The Three Erie Canals, History and Folklore,” Bruce will show slides of the three Erie Canal eras beginning with Clinton’s Ditch, completed in 1825, and ending with the canal of today. He will discuss canal folklore and stories and explain the local canal sites in the South Wedge area. He will also demonstrate the use of canal horns used for signaling by boaters on the canal.
Bruce is a member of the Canal Society of New York State, a not-for-profit educational organization that enables people to visit canal sites in New York State and beyond through regular, organized field trips, to share information and ideas about preserving canal history and traditions, and to advocate for canal renewal and development.
